Southbourne hotels: the quiet family end

Southbourne is where locals send friends who want the beach without the pier crowds. Southbourne Grove runs the shopping high street two streets back from the cliff; Overcliff Drive follows the clifftop east to Hengistbury Head. The beach here allows dogs on-lead all year, which decides most bookings by itself.

Local knowledge in 60 words.

Southbourne is a walk-everywhere neighbourhood if your hotel sits between Grand Avenue and Fisherman’s Walk. The cliff-lift at Fisherman’s Walk drops you on the sand in 90 seconds when it runs (Easter to end of September). Off-season, use the ramp beside Overcliff Drive car park. Bournemouth Pier is 25 minutes by bus 1a, 12 minutes by car.

Three Southbourne picks.

  • Cliffeside Hotel. Family-run on Overcliff Drive, patio rooms suit dogs, breakfast honest rather than fancy. 3 minutes on foot to the cliff-lift. Rate band £110 to £170.
  • Chine Hotel (Boscombe-Southbourne border). Older seafront property with outdoor pool in summer and an easy 6-minute walk down to the promenade via Boscombe Chine gardens. Rate band £120 to £220.
  • Roundham House. Small B&B on Grand Avenue, 5 minutes from Southbourne Grove cafes, 7 minutes to the sand via Grand Avenue steps. Rate band £95 to £140.

Practical tips.

  • Dog rule: on-lead all year on Southbourne beach, off-lead permitted at Hengistbury Head. The 10:00-18:00 May-September ban applies west of Boscombe Pier only.
  • Parking: Overcliff Drive is pay-and-display 08:00 to 18:00, free overnight. Grand Avenue side streets are permit-only after 17:00.
  • Seasonal: the cliff-lift closes early October to Easter, so factor an extra 8 minutes down the ramp during winter stays.
