Bournemouth’s beach season runs from late May to mid-September, with the reliably warm-water fortnight in early August and the reliably empty-beach fortnight in early June. Where to stay depends on whether you want the pier crowds, a dog on-lead, or a quiet family swim.
Month by month, briefly.
Late May. First reliable warm weekends. Water at 13 to 14 degrees, so wetsuit if you swim seriously. Hotels 30 to 40 percent cheaper than August peak.
June. Half-term is busy the first week, then quiet until late month. Water 15 to 16 degrees. Best value fortnight of the year for coastal walks and empty beaches.
July. School holidays begin around 20 July. Prices step up. Water 17 to 18 degrees, comfortable for children.
August. Peak. Air Festival occupies four days mid-month; hotels sell out and prices double. Book by March if you want an Air Festival stay, or plan a shoulder week (first week or last week of August) if you want the beach without the crowds. Water 18 to 19 degrees.
Early September. Water 17 to 18 degrees, weather still summer-like, families gone. The best week of the year for a couple’s beach break.
Where to stay by intent.
Pier and nightlife: town centre. Family with a pool: West Cliff. Dog on-lead: Southbourne or Sandbanks. Sea view without paying Chewton Glen prices: Cumberland or Miramar on East Cliff. Splash-out weekend: The Pig on the Beach in Studland, or Chewton Glen if you have the budget.
