Luxury hotels in Bournemouth: 5-star and country-house stays

Luxury within 20 miles of Bournemouth Pier means one of three things: a country-house estate (Chewton Glen), a coastal-and-kitchen destination (The Pig on the Beach), or a spa-hotel with harbour views (Christchurch Harbour). Each does something the others do not, and we rank on fit not stars.

Local knowledge in 60 words.

Chewton Glen sits in the New Forest 25 minutes east of the pier. The Pig on the Beach is on Studland cliffs, reached via the Sandbanks Ferry or the 40-minute Wareham route. Christchurch Harbour Hotel is the closest genuine 5-star equivalent to Bournemouth centre at 14 minutes’ drive. Within Bournemouth proper, the Marriott Highcliff is the town’s ceiling.

Three luxury picks.

  • Chewton Glen. 5-star relais country house with treehouse suites and the Vetiver kitchen. Not seafront: forest and gardens. 25 minutes to Bournemouth Pier by car. Rate band £480 to £950.
  • The Pig on the Beach. Studland cliff-top kitchen-garden hotel, all-day sea view. Sandbanks Ferry crossing plus 5 minutes drives from the pier in about 35 minutes total. Rate band £280 to £560.
  • Christchurch Harbour Hotel. Waterside spa, priory-town setting, Jetty restaurant on the water. 14 minutes from the pier. Rate band £220 to £420.

Practical tips.

  • Dog rule: Chewton Glen and The Pig both take dogs in select rooms with a £30-per-stay fee; Christchurch Harbour dog rooms cap at £25.
  • Parking: all three include valet or complimentary self-park; no BCP pay-and-display considerations.
  • Seasonal: The Pig raises rates 20 percent from July to end of August; Chewton Glen sells out New Forest weekends in October.
