Christchurch hotels: priory town on the harbour

Christchurch is the priory town at the mouth of the Stour and Avon. The Norman priory dominates the skyline; the harbour reaches south to Mudeford Quay and the ferry across to Mudeford Sandbank. A 14-minute drive from Bournemouth Pier, with two of Dorset’s best waterside spa hotels.

Local knowledge in 60 words.

Stay near Christchurch Quay for pubs and priory views; stay at Mudeford for the sandbank and beach-hut walk. The Mudeford ferry (a small motorboat, not a car ferry) crosses to the sandbank every 15 minutes April to October. Christchurch station has direct South Western trains to London Waterloo, 1h 50m.

Three Christchurch picks.

  • Christchurch Harbour Hotel. Waterside spa, Jetty restaurant, harbour rooms with private balconies. 4 minutes from Mudeford Quay ferry. Rate band £220 to £420.
  • Captains Club Hotel. Modern on Wick Ferry, floor-to-ceiling harbour views, spa and pool. 2 minutes from the priory across the Wick footbridge. Rate band £180 to £320.
  • The King’s Arms. Georgian coaching inn on Castle Street, 3 minutes to the priory and Quay. Rate band £120 to £210.

Practical tips.

  • Dog rule: Mudeford Sandbank permits dogs on-lead year-round; Avon Beach follows the standard 10:00-18:00 May-September ban.
  • Parking: Quay car park is £2.40 per hour, £14 daily; Wick Lane is free after 18:00.
  • Seasonal: the Mudeford ferry runs Easter to end of October; land ferry, a car ferry, or Hengistbury land-train are the winter alternatives.
